When I met Curt Asche at the Arctic Cat 50th Anniversary in the summer of 2011 (shown above), he and his son Steve (below, proudly showing his ArcticInsider decal at the 50th) caught my attention because Curt’s 2007 TRV 650 H1 ATV had a whopping 31,200 on the odometer!
Obviously anyone who’s averaged nearly 8,000 miles a year is worthy of some recognition (as well as my envy… I only wish I could ride that many miles a year on all my toys combined).
Well, Curt’s kept riding the TRV and, at the last check, he’s almost logged another 20,000 SINCE then!
That’s right… this mint-looking machine now has more than 51,000 miles on the odometer. Well, actually that’s not exactly true because, unfortunately, the gauge was originally programmed to “roll over” once it hit 20,000 miles, so it doesn’t show the actual number of miles.
Although now that I think about it, it might present an opportunity for Curt to sell his TRV at a better price, because nobody would suspect that this otherwise excellent condition machine would have so many clicks.
Anyway, the fact is that this machine has been ridden almost 51,000 miles, with no plans to stop anytime soon.
Here’s an image collage that shows the TRV’s odometer at various points along its nearly 51,000 miles.
For the record, Curt lives in Pequot Lakes, Minn., and he does most of his riding in Northern Minnesota. He uses his TRV for more than just trail riding though… including towing a trailer with lawn mowing equipment for his lawn care business, as well as for plowing snow on more than 20 customer driveways each winter.
According to Steve:
“A typical ride for Curt starts at his house and includes ditches, forest roads or designated ATV trails where permitted. He never trailers anywhere, preferring instead to ride right from his house. He will ride up to Backus, Kkeley, Walker and Outing (Minn.).
“In a typical day he rides 50 to 75 miles, with higher mileage days approaching 150 (his Akeley route).
Initially he truly set out to hit 50,000 miles. He’s also wanted to ride from his house to Thief River Falls but was worried he would run into issues about illegal riding areas.
The only major repair that was needed was a new motor, but that was almost 23000 miles ago! He was well taken care of at Country Cat even though he didn’t purchase it there. Those folks are awesome!”
Hats off to you, Curt!
Keep on rollin’ (and sending in updates).
Your ATV still looks great Curt! I know the stock tires have never been intended for much hard-surface running, nor this kind of miles. I have to ask though, what type of tire have you had the best luck with and how often do you have to change them?
Tom, he has exclusively used the stock good year rawhides. Averaged about 12000 miles a set. I found him some “street legal” ATV tires from GBC and that is what he has been running for over a year. I believe they are called street force. The only 12″ tires I could find. These tires show very little wear and have a 24000 mile tread life.
I guess when you take care of things, they last a long time!
I have 2 – 2006 Arctic Cat ATV’s and the only thing I’ve changed are the batteries and oil!!!
12,000 miles is pretty impressive for stock tires, I would have guessed less. I am going to try a set of highway tires someday.
