Written by his wife Amy, the brief recap below of Team Arctic oval racer Gary Moyle’s final weekend of the 2014 season perfectly illustrates the uncertainty of competition, and the thrill of sticking with it.
Congrats to Moyle racing for an outstanding finish to this season!
What a great ending to our race season in Beausejour, Manitoba for the 52nd Annual Canadian Power Toboggan Championships! Temperatures lingered around -25 degrees the entire weekend, but we couldn’t have been happier with the outcome in the Championship Final.
Saturday Racing brought wins in every heat race and qualified us first for the final. We had a mysterious electrical issue with our ignition system that shut down our sled while we were leading the race. Gary said he was baffled, it just shut off.
When they pulled the sled off the ice and into the trailer, they found the problem but also found that the track was ripped, which could have caused many more issues for the team, sled and driver. So we feel that the electrical issue was perfect timing. We fixed the ignition coil, and put a new track on, working late in the trailer on Saturday night.
Sunday we were back at it. Finishing 3rd, 1st and then another DNF… we again pulled the #66 Arctic Cat back off the ice into the trailer where we found a broken piston ring to be the culprit. Fixed it just in time to pull out on the track for the Canadian Championship Final.
After the first lap gained the lead and never looked back, taking the checkered flag for our third Canadian Title. It has been awhile, have not won this race since 2008, so it was great to put our name back on the trophy!
